The Cottage Mix Series was back in full swing for 2025! For the Canada Day long weekend we're starting with the Friday Night Edition (same as in 2023, it's a live recording from a "Retro Attic" weekly event I filled in for, so nothing newer than 10yrs old). I've got a Saturday Afternoon edition recorded at a corporate and a Saturday night edition recorded at the RCYC season launch and just last night I recorded a "Retro 80's edition" of a Summer Home In Mykonos, so I just need to decide what mix to use for a Sunday Morning edition! As much as I'm sitting on a pile of recordings to use for Soul Shack episodes, after I finished my set Friday night at Mansion, I was like "I should use this as a Soul Shack Mix". It's quite the musical journey - Beginning of the night is always just for me, and this time it involved the new Little Simz track Free, a small set of jungle remixes and of course at least one Sade track for the head bouncer, but then I went into (my version of) party mode, doing my best to rock the party, but with a mature Soul Shack influence, and trying to avoid most of the super cheesy and cliche sing along stuff (there's still a little bit though) and then finished off with a few classic house tracks. I felt like with me posting this mix the day after my birthday (on Mixcloud), it only made sense to use a recording that I named "Jamie's gift to himself". It's a live recording from my monthly at Clockwork, but this was the day after djing a set at Alvaro G's "Forty Nine" party, where I wanted to keep playing proper house music... so that's exactly what I did the next day at Clockwork! While recording, I had 2 people come up to compliment the music. When I asked if they were visiting or local, they were both locals, and when I asked a follow up, I already knew the answer - "did you used to go to Roxy Blu?", and of course they both said yes. So back in April of last year, when I was celebrating my 50th at Better Days, along with the "So This Is 50" mix I posted earlier, I also recorded a new bar promo mix. Here's both parts, with the 1st half starting super chill and sort of staying at more of an urban tempo and under 110bpm the whole time. Lot's of 90's throwback hip hop & rn'b, some 80's retro and a bunch of various other grooves, blends, reworks and eclectic goodness and then the 2nd half starts at mid tempo amapiano / kaytranada vibes, building to house, then closing out with throwback hip hop. I'm brought back "Cottage Cocktails"! I haven't posted a Cottage Cocktails mix since 2019, but after djing an amazing cottage tent wedding last summer, I was inspired to record a cocktail mix that would be the perfect soundtrack for that cottage setting (but the couple that weekend had their own plans for cocktail music) so the following weekend I recorded this during cocktails at a wedding downtown Toronto. Recorded in the big city, but this is meant to be listened to up in Muskoka, or at the very least while floating in a pool, or perhaps just sitting around a backyard bonfire (or sipping on a coffee or tea in your favourite comfy chair). The people spoke! I asked Instagram what I should post first, a house focused live recording from Beacon last month, or my eclectic 2024 Bar Promo that I recorded back at the same time as "So This Is 50", and the people wanted the Beacon mix first, so here it is! Beacon is an older crowd to begin with, and this particular night there were 2 birthday parties for women around my age, so there was plenty of retro remixes being thrown in the mix! It's a full night mix so it starts off a little more chill while dinner is ending, then picks up the energy as the night transitions from restaurant to bar. Hope you enjoy! So April 2020 at the start of Covid I got nostalgic and recorded a 90's (isolating in the) house mix. A year later Ontario was going into yet another 4 week lockdown and I got nostalgic again, posting a hip hop from my twenties mix. This year I figured I'd keep with this new tradition of nostalgia for April and am posting a Throwback rn'b mix! This mix is more mainstream than my usual more "neo soul" rn'b vibes, inspired heavily by a wedding I had recently dj'd, where the grooms wanted throwback rn'b during dinner. So last April I got nostalgic and recorded a 90's (isolating in the) house mix. A year later Ontario is going into our latest 4 week lockdown and I'm getting nostalgic again, but this time for the hip hop from my twenties. There will be a second "street" edition, but part one here is (for lack of a better word) more of the "backpack" stuff.
